a very happy talaween
On October 3rd, we brought the spooky vibes to our Highwood café with our annual staff Halloween party! What better way to kick off the Halloween week than with a little recap of all the fun?
Tala To-Go: The Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival
Between pumpkin carving, carnival rides, and live music, the Great Highwood Pumpkin Fest exceeded every expectation. Fueled by pumpkin spice lattes and fall spirit, it was one of those perfect autumn days that left us excited for more. Maybe next year, we’ll even carve more pumpkins and help break that world record!
Winnetka Cafe Grand Opening
We are so incredibly blessed by the community that has supported us since opening our doors in late November. Since then, we have been welcomed to the neighborhood with open arms, and have been so grateful to see the way the community has already taken to our new little corner of the Indian Hill district.
Behind the Bar with Molly
Molly has been a part of the Winnetka team since day one and is currently training to become the cafe manager. You can catch her opening the café almost every day! Learn more about your favorite Winnetka barista in this interview.
The Uniqueness of Small Business
As November comes to an end and the holiday season approaches, there is a special day we are particularly excited about: Small Business Saturday. This is a day dedicated to supporting and celebrating small businesses across the country, and we are thrilled to be a part of it! We know you will be tired from all of the Black Friday shopping you will be doing, so stop into Tala and shop small on November 25, 2023!
One Year With Coffee Club
“I noticed that you had a Coffee Club subscription, and I just thought it would be a great way to dive in and explore what your business has to offer.” One year later Billy and Maria are still loving the perks and new experiences that come with trying a different coffee every month.
Behind the Bar with Sydney
Sydney started working at Tala as a Neighborly delivery driver in the summer of 2022. Long before she was an employee, Syd was a regular at the cafe—partly because her sister Lucy worked with us, but also because it’s where she did homework almost every day after school. After doing Neighborly for a few months, Sydney joined the cafe team and has worked steadily ever since!
In Celebration of Mom
From our biological moms, to the role models and women that have built a motherly bond with us over time, we are so thankful for each and every one of you. You have brought comfort, advice, kindness, gentleness, love, and unending support into our lives. You show us how to keep going and what matters most in life. As a way to say thank you to our moms and the women who show us what being motherly means, the Tala staff has written up a quick list of our favorite things about mom.
Behind the Bar with Tayah
Currently Tayah works full time as a Shift Supervisor and our Event Coordinator. She is also one of the youngest on the Tala Team, although her maturity would make that hard to guess. Even when she isn’t on shift, Tayah can often be found hanging out at the cafe. If you’re a Highwood regular, you may already know a few things about Tayah. Let’s see if you learn anything new!
Getting Creative with Amoret
“You can make it in the morning for caffeine or whatever and that’s great and definitely a benefit but to another extent, it’s a way to put time aside in the morning and slow yourself down. If you’re doing the pour over or if you’re just sitting down with a drip and just drinking it. At least for me it gives time in the morning and it’s definitely just a dedicated part of the day type of thing.” Jesse Taylor, creator of the song amoret
New year, new aspirations and of course, more coffee!
In honor of the upcoming year and rounding up the last few moments of 2022, we have asked Tala team to take a moment and share their new year’s resolutions or past year’s fondest memories. Since so many of us get to see so many of you everyday- you all can join us and check in on our progress as we chat across the bar! With that, here are the Tala team’s reflections and hopes as we end yet another wonderful year!
Freadom
Today is National Read Across America day, a perfect day to celebrate our friends over at Freadom, a new non-profit launched just a few months ago, whose aim is to support literacy across America. Any product purchased from Freadom right now also comes with a sample bag of our coffee, and 100% of profits goes toward literacy initiatives across the country.
Small Business Saturday 2020
In typical 2020 fashion, this Small Business Saturday hits differently than most. The strangely somber undertone of this year is how many small businesses across the country—and world, for that matter—are closed for this special day, some temporarily and others permanently. With that as the backdrop of today, it is with even deeper gratitude that we extend our sincerest thank you to all of you.
Favorite Memory Winners
We heard so many amazing stories from people's experiences at Tala this week. In fact, we had way more submissions than we were prepared for, so it has taken several extra days to sort through it all. Thank you to everyone who shared their memories and thoughts about our cafe. We are so honored by the community and stories you’ve provided! We’ve chosen the top five memories, and randomly picked the winner of the $200 giveaway. Read all five stories below and see who is the lucky grand prize winner.
Favorite Memory: The Meeting
We’ve made it to the end, folks. End of the week, last look back on year two before we shove all nostalgia down and stuff it into the vault until next August. I won’t have as colorful storytelling as Matt, as eloquent language as Conner, or as sentimental, tear-jerking material as Marcus, but what I can do is ramble on aimlessly for awhile like I normally do. You should all be used to that by now.
Favorite Memory: Ride to Work
I started at Tala in the midst of the pandemic, where many of us have been able to pursue new hobbies, interests, and curiosities. My goal throughout the more at-home time during quarantine was to spend more time with my family. I haven’t lived at home for many years, and this was a perfect opportunity to spend time with my loved ones.
Favorite Memory: A Fruitful Year
Regardless of where you are in life or what you're going through, life has a funny way of bringing you joy. In my case, everything began changing for the better when I came to Tala. I was brought on board to the team the day before the cafe's first birthday last year. And let me tell you, so much has happened that this past year has felt like three.
Favorite Memory: Things and Stuff
I happen to be fond of a poet named William Carlos Williams. You may know him from high school English class. Chances are he wrote one of, if not the poem that caused you to think poetry is dumb.
Favorite Memory: Fire Alarm
I was off work the fateful day. That didn’t stop me from cruising right on over at 1 o’clock. The sun provided an excellent ray of brightness into a rather dry and frigid day. I don’t like cold. I wear pants any degree under 71…
Favorite Memory: In Charge
I’ve spent the last eight-ish months about 3,000 miles away from Highwood due to the COVID situation. If the whole virus thing hadn’t happened, I’d probably be in the café right now—either on shift or doing some academic work or playing a card game...
