Gatuya Factory PB: Murang'a, Kenya

A Knockout Kenya: Gatuya Factory PB

Simply put, Gatuya Factory PB is one of the most exciting and delicious Kenyan coffees we’ve tasted in the past two years. This lot hits the cup with an undeniable, mouth-watering juiciness and a candy-like sweetness that makes it nearly impossible to put down. With crystal-clear flavors of blackberry, grenadine syrup, and apricot candy, it checks every box we look for in a standout Kenya coffee—and then some.

We’ve long been known for sourcing exceptional Kenyan coffees, and this year’s Gatuya Factory PB is a perfect example of why. Kenya has experienced a challenging period in recent harvests due to climate-related production issues, but this year marks a notable improvement in the overall quality of the coffees coming out of the region. Gatuya Factory showcases just how dynamic and expressive Kenyan coffee can be when conditions align, and also how much external factors, such as climate and environmental impact, can affect quality and taste.

What Is a Peaberry (PB), and Why Does It Matter?

This lot is a peaberry, a rare mutation where only one small, round seed develops inside the coffee cherry instead of the usual two. Because of their shape and density, peaberries roast a bit more evenly and often deliver a more concentrated, distinct, and vivid flavor in the cup.

In the case of Gatuya Factory PB, that means the fruit notes are dialed in beautifully through a meticulous roasting process—dark berries, syrupy sweetness, and bright stone fruit candies come through with stunning clarity. If you’ve never had a peaberry before, this is the one to try. It’s a perfect showcase of what makes these coffees so unique and sought after.

The Standout on the Table

We tasted ten different Kenya samples from three of our most trusted importers, and this one instantly stood out. From the first sip, it was clear: Gatuya Factory PB had the most mouth-watering profile, the cleanest fruit tones, and the most drinkable structure of them all. It reminded us of the legendary Kenya lots we fell in love with back in the early 2010s, when some of us here at Tala were first getting hooked on specialty coffee.

This coffee transported us back to that notable time in our company’s coffee journey. It sparked that same excitement and nostalgia, while also feeling fresh, vibrant, and totally of-the-moment. It was the best coffee on the table from start to finish—and we can’t wait for you to taste it for yourself.
